Robert's vast accomplishments are a tribute to a lifetime of virtue in his short 69 years. He graduated from Calvert High School in 1966. As an honored Veteran, he proudly served his country in the United States Army. Robert enlisted during the Vietnam War and attaining the rank of sergeant. After his tenure in the Army, he joined the Metropolitan Police Department. As an active duty Police Officer, he worked as a member of the Metropolitan SWAT Team and later as a bodyguard for the Mayor of Washington DC, retiring after 23 years of service. After Robert retired from the Metropolitan PD, he became a police officer with the Smithsonian Institute's National Zoo Police. His mother once said, "He went from the circus to the zoo". He steadily rose through the ranks to become Acting Chief. From his joyful humor with adults he meet, to giving toy animals to children who visited the zoo, he was known for enriching the lives of visitors daily. He retired once more in 2009 as a Captain, unbeknown to him his next role in life would grant him the prestigious rank of "Opa" to his grandson Miquel in 2010. Robert's selfless acts of kindness continued throughout his life. He volunteered to visit local grade school programs speaking about a career as a policeman. He would hand out trinkets of love, faith, and support to people he met. He became a Motorcycle Safety Instructor for the State of Maryland Anne Arundel Community College for several years. He was well traveled, visiting most states in the United States, Kenya, China, Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Morocco, Caribbean Islands, Columbia, Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, Canada, Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia. He cruised both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Panama Canal. Robert was an adventurer at heart. Although not one for new experiences, he was a hiker, parasailer, luged, kayaked, and one time with a friend, sank a boat on the Intracoastal Waterway. Robert never met anyone who did not become his friend. He and Nova baked hundreds of dozens of cookies and gave them away at Christmas to individuals who cared for them during the year. He enjoyed eating the cookies as much as giving them away!! He made and gave away angels both in the United States and around the world. He is still giving them away as each of you may pick one up from the table when you come to his viewing. Robert enjoyed life, family members and many friends. He was a flirt and a charmer and was always quick to smile. Robert was always there to brighten the lives of others. So every you see a rainbow, that is Robert smiling down on you.
